Why is honey not vegan?

by Ronda

I just recently became vegan and am still learning daily about the do's and don'ts. Every book I have read says not to eat honey, but I don't quite understand why.

Honey is not vegan because . . .
by: Jeff

. . . it is pre-digested through the bodies of bees, which essentially makes it bee regurgitation! If that doesn't make it fun sounding, it is also a very simple carbohydrate (because it was pre-digested) and so will enter the bloodstream very quickly, causing a huge spike in your blood sugar. I don't think that it isn't so much a matter of cruelty to bees as it is an unhealthy addition to one's diet.

Honey
by: Anonymous

Thank you very much for your answer. With regard to cruelty to bees or lack thereof, I was always told that beekeepers took the honey away from the bees and replaced it with a sugar water substance so that they would have something to eat in place of the honey. In my mind, the honey is the bees' food and replacing it with a sugar water substitute is cruel.

Honey isn't vegan because,...

bees make it for themselves, not humans. It is an animal product, and vegans don't eat animal products. Also, many bees are harmed or even killed during the harvesting of the honey. Many honey is also imported from China, and boiled down and mixed with water, so it is impure and unhealthy! Though I won't deny that honey is bad for you, because it has many health benefits, it isn't needed in the diet- so why hurt bees when we can use dates and agave nectar?
