Weight loss diet for diabetics?

by Rita

I'm interested in trying your vegan weight loss course Get Down With Sass!, but am diabetic. I've never tried a vegan diet. Have tried many weight loss diets and give up, craving foods. Have heard such good things about a vegan diet. I have no idea how to do this, and certainly need to lose weight!

Sassy Sez:
Hi there, Rita!

To answer your question, about whether my weight loss course works well for those with blood sugar challenges, the answer is...possibly.

Here's why I say this.

I have had a handful of people over the past 2 years take the course who are diabetic. And half of them loved the course and would recommend it. And the other half became a bit frustrated.

So, being the customer service freak I am, I wanted details; how could I help, what could I do differently?

And what I discovered is that they all really loved the information provided. But since the course is not FOCUSED on helping diabetics - it is more generic than that - it was up to the individual to make the changes necessary. For instance, where we talk about eating fruit in the course, a diabetic would have to know WHICH fruits they can and cannot eat because that is not something that would be provided.

So long story short, if you have a very good handle on the limits and types of foods you can and cannot eat, then you should be able to benefit from the course, making changes as needed.

Hope this helps. :O) xo

Vegan Resource for Diabetics
by: Jenelle Shadwick

I am diabetic and have eaten a vegan diet with the guidance from "The 30-day Diabetes Miracle" by House, Seale, & Newman and the companion "The 30-day Diabetes Miracle Cookbook" by House, Fleming, Brinegar, Kennedy, $ Newman. The authors of these books focus on the many issues faced by diabetics, present hope for gaining control, and give recipes and menus that are well balanced.
I have followed this program for three years, have lost 55 pounds, and have my diabetes in good control. It has been a lifesaver for me.

Doctor Highly Recommends Vegan Diet for Diabetics!
by: Karen B

Dr. Neal Barnard has written several books and also produced a DVD in conjunction with Public TV,on the subject of Diabetes and the Vegan Diet.
You can buy his books and the DVD on Amazon.com.
In his book on the subject Dr. Barnard beleives that cutting out animal protein and fat which means essentially eating vegan...is essentiaal to gaining control over your blood sugars.
I have tried it and it works, but that said, it isn't easy to switch years of eating habits overnight. It takes a lot of personal effort to succeed. Dr. Barnard also has published a Cookbook and it is an excellent way of getting started and for learning about which fruits and vegetable, grains, etc. are good for diabetics. Also he talks about portion control, glycemic index and the like. You can use his cookbook along with this website to learn all you need to start and to keep eating in a way that will quickly bring your bloodsugars under control and can even lead to a reduction in medications and insulin. It can in certain individuals lead to a complete remission of diabetes all together!

Just started Vegan/diabetes improving!
by: Mary Ellen

I just began my Vegan way of eating Feb 4th, 2011.
In 2 weeks time, I had to start a Daily Food Journal due to my diabetes readings were starting to go really low! I normally would eat take out food -chinese/italian at work. I started packing my own dinners and found that my blood sugar was much much lower after dinner than before.

In fact, I have an appointment with my medical doctor to tell her about the vegan diet and
discuss how to handle it when my blood sugar
goes low and i am due to take my evening Metformin pills... I find that until I talk to her, I have to take glucose pills just to raise my blood sugar up so that i feel comfortable taking my evening diabetes pills. So defintely there has to be a change in my medication pretty soon.

I also feel much more energetic and love eating clean/pure foods such as bananas, apples, steam in bag vegetables.

I fry tofu slices in frying pan and put Peanut Sauce found in chinese aisle over it to give it flaver...tastes fantastic!!

Hope I have encouraged some diabetic people out there to go Vegan!!
