It's important to learn what you can about who is working behind the scenes of a website you enjoy, don't you think? So I've created this page to help answer some questions you might have about who I am, why this site has been built for you, and (as numerous people ask me) why I give away so much information for free.

Here's my story...

Back in 1991, I graduated with Honors as a Court Reporter. It was a career I sort of fell into, and one that was unique, interesting, and very challenging. Plus it made for great conversation at cocktail parties. :)

But after 6 long and stressful years, I decided it just wasn't for me, which left me in a very strange position...

Because I wasn't qualified to do anything else!

So I jumped from one job to the next, trying to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up. I found it incredibly difficult to establish a new career. I tried network marketing, banking, restaurant/cocktail server, bookstore management, Cruise Director's staff, flight attendant, even a singing career! I was all over the place.

It's not that I sucked at my jobs. Since I grew up with a very strong work ethic, I gave my all and excelled at every job I attempted, even winning awards here and there for my accomplishments. So being a slacker was NOT the problem.

So what WAS the problem?

Why couldn't I find a career that made me happy and content?

In 1997, at the age of 31, most of my friends were approaching a decade of working in a solid career and knowing what their future held for them. I felt lost and confused and depressed, feeling a desperate need to find my niche in the world.

VEGAN COOKING AS A CAREER?

Since I loved to cook so much, I dreamed of finding a way to make money at it. But all I could think of was the looooong hours working in a restaurant away from home, and that was just not something I was willing to do.

In 2003 I discovered Personal Chefs Network, which opened my eyes to a very cool way to make money cooking for others.

So after 9 years as a vegan with lots of hands-on practice and
honing my vegan cooking skills, I opened Chef Sassy's Vegan Personal Chef Service (changing the name later to Whirled Peas Personal Chef Service), preparing delectable vegan meals for my
fantastic clients.

I was fairly happy in my new Personal Chef career. But after a while, I realized there was a tiny glitch in my plan...

IF I STOPPED WORKING, THE MONEY STOPPED COMING IN

"Sassy, of COURSE if you stop working the money stops coming in!"

But have you ever stopped to ask yourself why this is the general and accepted norm for our society?

I sure did.

In fact, take a peek at a list I had previously drawn up of everything I needed to find if all the planets lined up and I was living my perfect life:

SASSY'S PERFECT CAREER:

1. Work for myself;
2. Work from home;
3. Make money even when I'm not "on the clock"
4. Express myself creatively;
5. Be of service to others.

Okay, I realize this seems like a tall order.

Was I crazy to be asking so much from a career?

Was I asking too much from life?

Well, I (for one!) didn't think so.

And since my Personal Chef Service didn't meet ALL of my criteria, and I wasn't getting any younger, I closed the virtual doors for good.

AT THE END OF MY ROPE

I truly was beginning to think there was nothing out there for me and my picky self. I was feeling very dejected. Very much like a loser. Feeling a strong need to just take the advice of friends and family and pull my head out of the clouds, find a 9-5 job, and just make money like NORMAL people.

But I just couldn't bring myself to give up on my dreams. I didn't know how it would happen, but I just knew I would find my way to the other side of the rainbow in a very dramatic Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz sort of way.

I ACCIDENTALLY STUMBLE UPON THE PERFECT CAREER

One day, when researching on the internet, I discovered Site Build It. SBI promised to teach me how to create a top online business by building a website about a topic I love. It seemed to make sense, and would allow me to have my perfect career, hitting upon all the major points that are important to me.

But what the heck did I know about building a website?

NOTHING!

The only thing on the internet I was good at was checking my emails and doing Google searches. But since SBI offered me a money-back guarantee if it didn't work out, I had nothing to lose.

But what could I make a website about? What specific talents, knowledge, or hobbies did I have that others would find useful?

Well, it may seem obvious to you, but it wasn't to me. After a false start with another topic, I began to wonder if perhaps there are others out there who can benefit from my many years of experience as a vegan?

So I talked it over with Jeff. I don't know if it was my passion shining through, or if he just knew I was feeling really low, but we agreed I should give it a go. What's the worst that could happen?

So let's see how SASSY'S PERFECT CAREER checklist measures up:

1. Work For Myself

Check! I LOVE being the boss and setting my own schedule. I take direction from one person (me!) and work as much or as little as I want to. Of course, I love my little online business so much that I think about it and work on it nearly all of my waking hours 7 days/week. Believe me when I tell you that you would never have caught me doing this in any other career.

2. Work From Home

Check! I love the freedom to wake up when I've had enough sleep and then proceed to a good long workout before I begin my day. Jeff is close by to gaze upon whenever I want. We bounce ideas off of each other all day, share a lunch break, and even take time for some Afternoon Delight (tee-hee). But most importantly I can work in comfy clothes and walk to work without leaving home.

3. Make Money Even When I'm Not On The Clock

Check! Since the web is worldwide, my site is always "open for business". My visitors can explore the site, click on ads, purchase books (and more!) at all hours of the day or night. So I make money if I'm wake or asleep, cooking, running errands, even traveling.

But what is most amazing is that my income has continued to rise each and every month even through our current economic recession. Crazy, but true.

4. Express Myself Creatively

Check! SBI gives me everything I need to easily set up my site with a myriad of helpful tools. This allows me the freedom to write, make and test recipes, take photos of my food, plan the layout of a page, create a newsletter, figure out what fun direction to take my site next. It's a blast, truly. My site taps into my artistic side, which is why it never seems like work.

5. Be Of Service To Others

Check! Well, this is perhaps the cherry on top of the whole beautiful creation. Since I started my site in February of 2007, VeganCoach.com continues to move up in the ranks in internet land. People out there are finding my site to be helpful, so they keep coming back, they tell their friends, they link to my site. In fact, my site is in the top 1% of all sites on the internet today.

Take a peek at this page of some of the Top 1% of all Websites on the net, and you'll see my site listed. Having a top internet business means that people find my site and spend time here. Google notices the party at my virtual doorstep and rewards me with better ranking in the search engine. This in turn brings even more people to my site.

Not bad, for someone who knew nothing, zip, nada about how to build a website. :O)

BUT THE BIGGEST REASON I LOVE MY NEW CAREER?

People like YOU.

Because I receive SO many beautiful emails from my site visitors letting me know how thankful they are that I'm out here providing the information they're looking for.

Listen, if I can do this, you can too. Sure it takes hard work and a lot of commitment to build an online business -- it's a business after all.
