Substitute for soy products?

by Audrey
(Texas)

I love your site! I've been on the vegan diet for about 6 weeks and I've discovered that I am sensitive to soy products and nutritional yeast.

What is a good substitute for these items, for instance, in sauces or when used for flavor?

Thank you!

Audrey

Seitan
by: Anonymous

Seitan is a great soy (fake meat) substitute . Google it and you will find easy recipes. I recommend Vegan Yum Yum seitan recipes. It is made with vital wheat gluten and its got tons of protein and almost no fat. It's my favorite!

Umeoshi Vinegar
by: April

Hi -- I've been using Umeoshi vinegar as a substitute for soy sauce with some success. The brand I get from my local health food store is called "Eden selected Ume Plum Vinegar". I'm allergic to soy and wheat. -- April.

Beans
by: flowermom

Chick peas, kidney beans, seitan, sunflower butter, nuts,a product called quorn(check label ,some varieties have eggs).SO (brand) has really good coconut milk, yogurt and creamer.Use coconut liquid aminos:)Seitan is all gluten.A lot of people have trouble with gluten, some say its really bad to eat:(
Hummus, falafels, buckwheat noodles, and Barilla plus pasta are all easy ways to get protein:)
