How To Make Easy and Yummy Steamed Beets

Steamed beets are delicious as well as nutritious, with absolutely no added fat. Perfect for those watching their weight, or for those who enjoy the straight ahead earthy taste of beets.

Need a steamer recommendation?

I am often asked which steamer I use in my own kitchen. For years, I have used this counter-top steamer by Black & Decker. It also comes in this cool double decker steamer version.

Not only do these steamers cook veggies without hassle, but they have a rice-cooking bowl as well, which is how we nearly always cook our brown rice.

Bonus: The entire unit from top to bottom is BPA free!

You can also use an inexpensive small metal or bamboo steamer basket that fits into a pot, but I prefer not having to use my stovetop whenever possible, especially when I have other things cooking.

Steaming beets cooks them up tender and perfectly delicious. Sometimes Jeff and I like to eat our beets steamed with absolutely nothing else added to them because the flavor of the beets can stand on their own.

Place the peeled and sliced, diced or chopped beets in a steamer. Cook for 5-15 minutes, depending on how small you have made them. Beets are done when they're tender to your liking.

You can also cook your beets whole, if you'd like. Count on anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour, depending on their size.

Use the Beet "Vegan Flavor Matches" to create your very own beet recipe.

Remember, one of the best reasons for using this steamed beets technique is because do not have to add fat of any kind. Now, fat is not always "bad" for you, especially healthy vegetarian fats such as olive oil.

However, if you are trying to lose weight, or simply do not like to add additional fats to your diet unless it is absolutely necessary, then making your beets steamed is a nice option. And really, if you have never tried your beets without any additional flavors, please give it a try because beets are truly delicious all on their own.
