Since Jeff and I have lived here in Reno (since 2001) we have visited Pneumatic Diner on many occasions. It's an interesting little adventure, and well worth a visit.
Upon entering Pneumatic, it's customary to grab your menus and nab a seat as you are greeted by the folks working hard behind the counter with a smile and a 'hi guys'!
The folks at Pneumatic have always managed to create tasty food even though they have VERY limited space.
There is a HUGE menu filled with lots of vegetarian dishes, and quite a few vegan dishes and desserts as well. I love that we can pop in during the hot Reno summers to order a vegan shake made with non-dairy ice cream. They serve breakfast every day, all day. (They offer waffles on Sundays, but please note they are not vegan.)
Here is a photo of what the place looks like. Small and eclectic, they usually feature a local artist on the walls, and they have music playing (sometimes very loudly) in the background.
Jeff started with the Vegan Vegetable Chowder, which he slurped up quickly and easily. The soup's broth was very flavorful and balanced, which really didn't surprise us - as I said, the food has always been very good.
I ordered my ol' Pneumatic standby, the Bayard which is a yummy mix of brown rice, vegetables and pesto sauce, topped with their very tasty falafel strips and chopped tomatoes. The rice was tender, the pesto herbacious and rich-tasting. As usual, the dish was a winner.
Jeff's Burrito was HUUUUGE, as you can see in the photo. Filled with rice, black beans, tofu and veggies, this dish normally comes with dairy cheese inside, but they offer a homemade vegan cheese too, which is what Jeff ordered. (This is not in all actuality a "cheese", but more of a very thick sauce made with hummus, nutritional yeast, and some other ingredients I can't remember right now.) Jeff is a burrito fanatic, and really enjoyed what Pneumatic whipped up for him.
Next up, dessert...
I chose the Apple Pie, warmed, with vanilla Rice Dream ice cream on the side. Jeff, huge Pumpkin Pie lover that he is, ordered their vegan version. The desserts are AMAZING.
Jeff sipped on a cup of their fantastic coffee throughout the entire meal, while I opted for their yummy Hot Chocolate. They offer a good selection of beverages, including wine and really good beer.
If you've never been to Pneumatic, or it's been a while, pay them a visit and support a local business.
Happy eating! :O)
