Muscular Dystrophy and the Vegan Diet

Hi Sassy,

I am aware that a vegan diet can reverse diabetes and cancer, and lower cholesterol. However, I'd like to know if you have any information regarding a vegan diet helping or curing muscular dystrophy.

I have a friend (non-vegan) who is very involved with health-related issues. He has asked this question and I'm dying to be able to say YES, a vegan diet can help/cure muscular dystrophy.
Any help/info you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Sassy Sez: Hi Di - Wow, that is certainly an interesting question you ask. Firstly, please know, that just about everything I teach is based on my own personal experience and those of my clients. In other words, I try not to tell someone something is true or not until I, myself, have lived it and know it without a doubt.

So having said that, since neither I nor anyone I have worked with suffers from MD, I cannot comment on whether or not a vegan diet would help. I have not come across any research which states this either.

Thank you for starting this topic. I hope someone who has experience in this area, or an opinion to share, will hop on and share their thoughts/expertise. xo Sassy

Vegan Diet and Muscular Dystrophy
by: Anonymous

The question posed is a very relevant one. I've been vegan for almost three years now and started on it when I was having trouble with my blood sugar and my doctors weren't giving me a lot of information about why or what to do about it.

Through online research I was able to find books that were able to help with my problem which turned out to be pre-diabetes (I also lost almost 70lbs. in the process). Through what I learned and utilizing it I was able stablize my blood sugar.

But more relevant to Muscular Dystrophy is my brother-in-law. He is quadraplegic (sp?) from it and so far he has not been on a vegan diet. Through my own experience in treating my own blood sugar problems strictly through the vegan diet the reading that I've done in The China Study among others I strongly suspect that if my brother-in-law spends enough time on this diet he could eventually restore at least part of his mobility. In the trailer for the documentary, Forks Over Knives, Dr. Campbell mentions that 80-90% of all diseases are related to diet. This is why I'm planning to get him an audio cd version of the China Study (among other audiobooks) for Christmas.

The question about vegan diets and Muscular Dystrophy is an interesting one and of personal interest to me and it has me researching other sources as well.
