Making beans without a pressure cooker?

by Virginia Greening

I don't have a pressure cooker to make beans. Is there another method on cooking beans?
Thank you for your time:)

Sassy Sez: Hi Virginia! Yes, there is another way to make beans! More than one way, actually, but at this time I give instructions on my website for two ways; one with the pressure cooker, and one in a regular pot on the stovetop.

Click here to visit the Beans page where you can learn much of the basics about beans, including how to select, clean, soak, cook and flavor your beans. And there you will find the links to two different pages:

another old way to cook beans
by: Anonymous

I grew up north of Boston. Every Sat. night we had oven baked beans. I knew of no other way to cook them till I moved to Cal. I always hated beans, now I love the South Western way to cook beans.

My beans taste terrible.
by: Anonymous

My beans are always so tasteless no matter how much spices I add. I use some dried peppers and just cook them with the beans. Then I add some picante sauce salt and pepper when I am done. They still taste "yucky" as my daughter puts it. Please tell me what spice I am missing and how I can make them taste good.

Here's an idea...
by: Sassy

Hi there!

Thanks for asking a great question. When cooking beans from scratch, the taste can be entirely different than canned beans. Which is actually a good thing! But if you're used to pre-cooked, canned beans, which are loaded with sodium, then your home cooked beans might taste boring.

I recommend you check out this link, "Black beans have no flavor", where we discussed this exact topic. Lots of great ideas from our community as well.

Enjoy!
