Jeff's Brown Rice Medley Video

Great Video! Are equal parts rice, barley etc used?

*****

Sassy Sez - Thanks, and glad you enjoyed our Brown Rice Medley video

The amounts of grains you use is completely dependent upon your personal tastes.

For instance, when Jeff mixes the combo he uses far more wild rice than I do. When I mix it up, I use far more brown rice.

I think a nice combination is 2 parts brown rice to 1 part each barley, lentils, and wild rice.

Again, mix it to your liking. You can do no wrong. ;O) xo

Great Rice Medley Video
by: Paulette

Enjoyed the Rice Medley Video. I noticed Jeff used a rice cooker/steamer. Can you tell me what brand. I have been unsuccessful in finding one I like that doesn't spit and sputter all over the countertop. Is that the nature of the "beast"? Or is the key soaking the mixture for at least 6 hours?

Steamer
by: Sassy

Hi Paulette!

Jeff is using the Black & Decker steamer and rice cooker. It's a pretty sturdy machine and does a great job. After 2-3 years, though, it dies so we have to get a new one. I hate all that landfill action! Plus, it's plastic, which may or may not mean BPAs, which I am learning more and more about and it's not good.

I am currently on the lookout for a stainless steel countertop steamer with a timer, which is a TALL order. I found one out of the UK, and have sent a message to see if it can be purchased somewhere around the US. Haven't heard back from them just yet. xo

Rice Steamer
by: Anonymous

I use my Pampered Chef Rice Cooker to make Jeff's Rice Medley. It comes out great every time. I soak the mixture overnight. After rinsing it in the morning, I add it to the cooker with the water (equal to the amount of the original mixture before soaking). Then, I cook it in the microwave for 25 minutes at the 50% power level. It comes out perfect, every time! The rice cooker is easy to clean (even on the top rack of the dishwasher), and can be used to steam/cook other things, as well, in the microwave. Thank you, Jeff and Sassy, for the great ideas....your site has been a wonderful discovery for a fledgling part-time Vegetarian!

Best Steamer
by: Sassy

Thanks for sharing your steaming experience. I am fond of many of Pampered Chef gadgets, especially their chopper! My friend Gary sells Pampered Chef and has gifted me some beautiful things.

Also, I heard back from the UK, and they don't offer their stainless steel steamer with timer here in the US. (Sigh.)

By the way, this just in...

Medley in Text?
by: L

LOVE the site -- LOVE the video of Jeff preparing the Brown Rice Medley. Is the recipe in text somewhere on the site?

Does your Site have a search feature?

AND I'm preparing Sticky Brown Rice in a rice cooker. Do I need to soak sticky rice first?

Thanks - L

Hi there...
by: Sassy

Hi L --

Great to hear from you, and glad you're enjoying the site. Thanks for letting me know. :)

The recipe isn't really a recipe, per se. It's pretty straight ahead, basically you soak 1 cup of rice in double the amount of water overnight. Then drain the water. Then add the soaked rice plus 1 cup of water to the steamer bowl.

You can double that "recipe". Or triple it!

But what seems to give most people a challenge is figuring out the ratios if you want to mix things up and made a "medley" of different grains and lentils. You can look to the beginning of this thread to see what I prefer, versus what Jeff prefers. In other words, make it your own. ;)

YES, I have a search feature here at VeganCoach.com. If you look to the left, in the navigation bar, you'll see "Search". It leads to my Sitemap page where you'll find a search box.

As far as Sticky Brown Rice, yes, I believe you have to soak it overnight. But honestly, I don't have much experience with it.

But this tutorial looks helpful:

Blazing Hot Wok: Crash Course on Thai Sticky Rice

The part that confuses me the most: Is sticky brown rice the same as Thai sticky rice?

Think I'll pop over there to see if she can answer this question. xo
