Is the Vitamix BPA-Free? Also, Vitamix vs Food Processor?

by Molly

Does your Vitamix double as a food processor? Or is it strictly for blending and not for chopping/slicing etc?

Also, do you know if its parts are BPA-free?

Thanks.

Sassy Sez: - Hi Molly! The Vitamix is different from a food processor, for the most part. I have a Cuisinart food processor which makes me feel all hoity toity, but quite frankly I don't use it very often.

A food processor usually comes with various blades so it can do different jobs such as shredding and slicing. I find a food processor is handy for doing a lot of thin slicing, such as when I make my yummy Scalloped Potatoes. And if I have to do a ton of chopping, the food processor is invaluable and saves time.

But sometimes I feel the clean up is sort of a pain for the amount of work it did for me!

The Vitamix I use constantly. It's VERY easy to clean. And it CAN chop food with a method called "wet chop". You put a veggie such as cut carrots in a Vitamix full of water and run it for a second, then pour the whole lot of it into a colander and your carrots are chopped. Minced, in all actuality if you're not careful.

Personally, I don't use my Vitamix for this job of chopping or mincing.

What makes the Vitamix invaluable to me is all the other things it can do such as:

  • Blend and cook smooth soups right
    in the container

  • Make nut butter

  • Make whole-vegetable and whole-fruit juices

  • Make fresh fruit "ice cream" and my favorite Chocolate Shake

  • Grind grains for fresh flour

  • And of course all the other things a blender can do such as make smoothies, sauces, dips, and dressings

So my Vitamix gets a work out every single day. It's invaluable because it can do so much and so you get a lot for your money. There really is nothing else like it,

Regarding your other question about BPA-free parts, wow that is a GREAT question! I didn't know the answer myself, so I called Vitamix and learned something new - yay! :O)

Since late 2007, all of the Vitamix containers and lids made from that point on (the Model is 5200) are BPA-free. Including the tamper, which you use to safely push food down into the blades for easier blending.

So, that is great news.

Thanks, and hope this helps. xo

Note: What is BPA? Bisphenol A. It is a synthetic estrogen which is used to harden polycarbonate plastics (used in some baby bottles, and bottled water) and in the resin used for lining cans.

The Centers for Disease Control tested Americans and BPA was found in the bodies of 93 percent of them! Trace BPA exposure has been shown to disrupt the endocrine system.

Just another thing for us to worry about. Oy vey! ;O)
