How To Make Sprouts?

by Edna
(Yuma, Az.)

I just finished making a pot of lentils in my new pressure cooker that you recommended and I love it, like all of your recommendations. I also got my water purifier by your advice. It's the greatest!

Now I want to know how you make your sprouts. I don't want to use the jars, it takes too much time even though it is the cheapest. What about the trays?

Thanks for all the good advice. I have been doing classes to share vegan recipes and started with four and now I'm up to 36. We have field trips to Asian stores and a great time. You're a great inspiration.
Thanks

Sassy Sez:

Hi Edna! Fabulous to hear from you, and I am SO happy to hear that you are continuing to share vegan recipes in your cooking classes. That is the best! Curious, what sorts of fun foods are you finding in the Asian stores?

Sprouts are fun and super easy to make. I don't like the jars either. And yes I use the sprouting trays and love them.

While there are many types of sprouts you can make, the ones I just love are buckwheat sprouts. They are amazingly easy to sprout, and taste terrific. I love to use them in salads. And occasionally I use buckwheat sprouts as a base for a raw pizza crust recipe I make in my dehydrator - but that is a topic for another post. ;)

So why do I love the sprouting trays? Because you can stack them on top of each other, and you can rinse and grow your sprouts while at the same time giving them lots of room to "breathe". While sprouting in a jar might work for many people, I have never liked the idea of the sprouts just sort of laying on top of each other in a big heap - something just doesn't seem right about that to me, in a food safety sort of way but that's just me.

I have actually dedicated a page of my site to making buckwheat sprouts, and I you will find it helpful.

Please let me know if you have any questions, Edna. Glad you are enjoying the pressure cooker! And the Berkey water purification system -- we just purchased another one, the biggest size they have (the Crown) and we were on a waiting list for a looong time to get it. Fortunately, they have smaller sizes available immediately for those who can't wait.

Thanks, Edna! Happy sprouting! xo
