Go Vegan: Educate Yourself

by Cathy Jaszczak

My number one tip for someone who wants to go vegan and considering a change to the vegan diet way of life is first and foremost to be easy on yourself. Remember you are changing your current dietary habits for a totally new healthy way of living. I say “living” because it uses lots of your time, energy and resources.

I remember when I decided to become Vegan back in 1994 - I thought - “no big deal”. I was never a big meat eater so why not? I was having some health issues and thought changing my diet would be a great idea.

While I am not sorry I changed those many years ago, I would have approached it differently. Instead of diving in head first I would have investigated, through research and questions. Don’t be hesitant to ask questions - no question is silly or stupid. It will be the best and easiest way for you to accomplish your goal of going Vegan.

I live in Minnesota, which is not exactly supportive of vegetarians and vegans. While things are just starting to change a bit, being vegan in Minnesota in 1993 was quite difficult; especially without any family support (except my wonderful daughter and her husband, who were many miles away). It can be very tough to do it alone, but it is certainly not impossible as I can attest to because I am still going strong all these years later.

If you are thinking of taking this journey by yourself, just be sure you have lots of information and support that will be helpful to you along the way. Read as many books as you can on the topic, especially books about vegan nutrition and how to put together a vegan meal plan.

Remember, you certainly do not have to change all at once. Always be satisfied with the steps you do take. Be sure to arm yourself with data, find places to shop and/or eat that will help you out along the way. Join a vegan group or get acquainted with people that will support the choice you have made to go vegan. It is, in my opinion, a better healthier way of life.

There is much more available today than there was back in 1993, even here in good old Minnesota. Do your homework. And enjoy your new vegan lifestyle!

With much respect to all.
