Okay, so I have never been a huge fan of hotdogs, even before I went vegan. Jeff, on the other hand, has always liked them. So when he wants "hotdog" night at home, I basically cringe.
So we were both excited when Freeman's opened on California Avenue close to downtown. Jeff was happy because he could get his hotdog fix without me griping. And I was happy because he could get his hotdog fix without me griping.
But after tasting their dogs, I am now a happy camper too - they have changed my dog outlook forever.
Freeman's is not a vegetarian restaurant – it has conventional hotdogs too. But they have 3 vegan dogs (regular, chipotle sausage, and Italian sausage) to choose from, and they are very tasty.

Since they keep their vegan dogs separate from the regular dogs, it will make most of you vegans breathe a sigh of relief.
As an added bonus, the buns are vegan too!
They also have some yummy vegetarian toppings to choose from such as sauerkraut, vegan chili, Asian coleslaw, pepperoncini, jalapenos, and even vegan soy cheese (Follow Your Heart brand). In addition to mustard and ketchup, they have a spicy chipotle lime aioli made with Veganaise (vegan mayo), and lemon tahini dressing. And they offer fresh salads.

So listen, the place is very small, but we have never had any trouble getting a table because turnover is pretty quick - I mean, it's not exactly like you need to hang out soaking up the ambiance. Basically, they get the job done, and they do it well, and then you move on with the rest of your day. In the warmer months, they have 2-3 tables outside too.
I love that we now have another place in Reno for Vegans to hang out with their non-veg friends because everybody can enjoy the experience. And since they're open late on the weekends, it's a great place to go after you've had a few beers - not that I would ever do that. ;O)
Freeman’s is a cool choice for those Vegans who can't remember the last time they went out for a hotdog. I highly recommend it.
