Fatty Acids

by Carole
(Baltimore, MD)

Hello. I have been trying to follow PCRM and the McDougall plans but find that I am suffering from increasingly dry skin. I have just started taking an algae-based omega oil. I have also just started increasing my water consumption. Is there anything else I can do to decrease skin dryness?

Thanks--Carole

Hi Carole - Healthy fats are incredibly important to our health, especially the health of our skin and hair.

Not sure what your exact diet is, but are you eating healthy fats in the form of whole foods? These foods include avocado, nuts, seeds, and some whole food soy products such as tofu and tempeh. Have you tried Sassy's Seedalicious Salad Topping? Great way to get a good balance of Omega 3s and 6s (healthy fats) into your daily diet.

bad omega 6
by: Kim

Hi--I know there's lots of lingo out there about Omega 6-3 and even -9 ratios. Truth is, especially for vegans, it's bunk to worry about anything but Omega 3s. We get WAYYYYYY! too much of the others--and it is true that too much of some eradicates the others. Omega 6 especially is everywhere in a vegan diet, so we should NEVER supplement it. Which is why it really bugs me that about the only vegan Omega 3 supplement out there adds a bunch of (much cheaper to produce) Omega 6. We need pure Omega 3 algae options, which currently, to my knowledge, don't exist. I eat a bit of fish (and therefore, I know, am not truly vegan) because Omega 3 is so necessary for my particular health issues. But it is for anyone, really--our brains are made of 1/3 Omega 3, after all! I recommend eating LOTS of sea veggies, many of them have it, not just algae.

I'm now taking Pure One omega 3. It's plant based. Give it a try.

Omega 3
by: Sassy

Thanks, Carole, for the recommendation. :)

Kim, I agree with you that many times we can get an overabundance of Omega 6, but it is not just vegans -- most people are getting far too much Omega 6 because so many of our foods out there that line the grocery shelf are made with Omega 6-rich vegetable oils. If you're eating a balanced diet of whole foods, you may or may not need to supplement with Omega 3. You can click here to understand what I mean by that.

If you feel you need to supplement with Omega 3, there are some options. Carole suggested one above. Jeff and I use Opti3.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for, Kim, but thought I would share just in case. xo!
