One day recently Jeff and I were on a leisurely walk down Virginia Street and noticed a cafe we had never seen before, Fairly Grounded Too. (Apparently the original Fairly Grounded can be found on Lakeside.) Being coffee shop aficianados, we popped in to take a peek and check out their menu.
My first thought on entering is how clean, modern, and spacious it is, offering quite a lot of seating. At the same time, they have managed to make it quite cozy; two of the corners of the cafe are separated a bit from the rest of the seating with shelving which allows for some privacy.
The walls are lined with artwork from local artists, and the shelves showcase various bowls and other decor which are also for sale.
There is a chalkboard over the register which lists a sampling of coffee, tea and other beverages, along with breakfast and lunch selections. But their menu is quite a bit larger, so be sure to check it out.
The coffee is deliciously strong, made using a "pour over" technique, which basically means they position a small carafe under the grounds and pour hot water over the top. The coffee then drips down into the carafe, as you see in this picture, which makes each cup about as fresh as you can possibly have it. I found the coffee to be robust and very tasty, yet not as hot as I like my coffee.
For lunch we both ordered the Vegan Mushroom Loaf Panini. Honestly, I was shocked how delicious it was! Warm and tender slices of mushroom loaf and tender roma tomatoes on the inside, and crispy and toasty on the outside. Served with cold red grapes, which helps to clean your palate when you're finished.
By the way, off to the left of the plate you'll see this amazing vegan cheesy spread which really brought the sandwich to another level. Sadly, they are no longer carrying it, but I highly recommend you do as Jeff and I do -- beg them to bring it back every time you go in and hopefully they will come to their senses and do it!
For dessert, I ordered the home-baked vegan biscotti which was perfectly crunchy and very flavorful. Jeff ordered the vegan brownie (it has nuts), which was as chocolatey as you would expect, although it could have used a teensy bit more moisture.
By the way, their menu also boasts more vegan vittles, such as oatmeal (which can be made vegan), everything bagels, soups, and cookies.
All in all, it was a good experience with delectably strong coffee all set in a perfectly comfy atmosphere, and we look forward to going back again soon. :O)
