Base ingredients for vegan sauces

by Amy Anderson
(Dublin, Ireland)

Hi

My question is about the base ingredients for vegan sauces. I'm based in Ireland and some other vegan cookbooks I've tried have used ingredients common in the USA but virtually impossible to find here. Could you tell me some of the base ingredients you use so I can know whether this book will be of help to me?

Thanks
Amy

Sassy Sez: Hi Amy! I believe most of the ingredients that form the base of vegan sauces taught in my book Get Sauced With Sass! would be easy to find anywhere, but I would be curious to know what you think. :)

Photo of Vegan Baked Potato ToppingThe sauce bases I recommend using include:
  1. Nuts and Nut Butters

  2. Seeds

  3. Silken Tofu

  4. Vegetables

  5. White Beans

  6. Whole Grains

The eBook also teaches which liquids to add to your sauce to provide the right consistency (such as veggie broth), as well as healthy fats (such as coconut milk or avocado), herbs and spices, and how to balance all these flavors to make a sauce that YOU love.

And that's just Section 1! ;)

Section 2 gives you sample sauce recipes and some easy (and edible) assignments to get you slowly but surely used to making your own sauces.

Then Section 3 provides tried-and-true vegan sauce recipes made in my own kitchen, as well as some yummy recipes made by those who used the instructions in this book to create their own masterpieces.

You will also find book recommendations and a Quick Reference Guide to flavors.

Hope this helps. And thanks for your interest. :) xo

Base ingredients cannot be found
by: Anonymous

I live in China and have been incorporating vegan principles into my diet. Overall, it's been a great experience, and not that difficult to do in China. However, it's an overstatement to say that the ingredients found in vegan sauces should be available "anywhere." For one, these sauces are typically Western style cooking. In Ireland, I can believe that some ingredients would be available more so than, say, China, but we also have to keep in mind a second point: Veganism is not a world-wide lifestyle. It's slowly becoming popular in Western countries, which means that those promoting it are also promoting Western-style food in general.

I have also been interested in this book, but seeing some sample recipes on the site have me unsure. Ingredients such as vegan butter, agave necter, various vegan creams, let alone something like avacado (not a northern fruit), flax seed, or Nutritional Yeast are just not to be found. In fact, most people I've talked to have never heard of these things. I believe this is why the person from Ireland is wondering about the base ingredients. Is there a way to make a vegan sauce using the typcial ingredients one finds in the simplest of vegan meals, without adding all these helpful, but overall Western (dare I say American), inventions?

Very interested to hear the reply

I also live in China and am waiting with bated breath for this answer! One of my biggest problem with trying to be vegetarian/vegan here is that the recipes I find all use Western-based ingredients. It's ridiculously hard to find these things and if you do manage to find them, the prices are astronomical. Do you have any resources or recipes for Asian-based recipes?

Like I said, I'm looking forward to your reply!

Wellll...

Thanks for your responses. Must remind you, though, that I live in the U.S. and my site is therefore focused on foods one finds in the U.S. So when you say you would like to know if you can make sauces using the ingredients you find in China, how is one to know what those ingredients are unless you live in China?

The question Amy asked was simply "Could you tell me some of the base ingredients you use so I can know whether this book will be of help to me?"

And my response? "I believe most of the ingredients that form the base of vegan sauces taught in my book...would be easy to find anywhere, but I would be curious to know what you think. :)"

So you can see, the assumption is NOT that you can find the ingredients anywhere. But these are simply the base ingredients I recommend in my book.

If you can't find these ingredients where you are, then this book likely isn't the one for you. xo

I realize that one can only know what's available in a certain region if they are actually there. Of course, some places are just easier than others. I remember the newsletter about Mexico and how it seemed pretty easy to find vegan foods, which is great! Also, the tips on the website about learning how to create vegan dishes based on flavor matches and one's own creativity are totally the touchstone of this lifestyle! That's what I love about it :) It's just a little frustrating wanting some of the foods we crave while abroad and not being able to get/make them in a healthy way.

As for Angie's question, the best things I have found are vegetarian cookbooks in both English and Chinese. A lot of Chinese people are vegetarian, so these cookbooks are pretty widely available in bookstores, especially in large cities. Otherwise, this website with the flavor matching has been one of my best resources. Lastly, if you happen to have an iPod touch, Whole Foods has a great free app with tons of easy recipes, too!

Thanks for sharing your ideas with our community. I'm sure it can be a frustrating position to be in. Very happy that VeganCoach.com has been of some help to some of you outside of the U.S. :) xo
