Adjusting to Vegan Diet

Hi Sassy,

It seems to me that my digestive system started revolting once I started regularly eating more fruits and veggies, etc., and almost completely cut out meat. This was very discouraging for me because it seemed like the healthier I was eating, the more issues (code for gas!)I had.

Have you or does anyone you know gone through this? Would it be easier to eat cooked veggies than raw? Thanks!

Sassy Sez - Hi there! Sorry to hear about your...ahem...challenges. ;O)

Switching to a diet with more plant-based foods means you are taking in more fiber, which can be a little difficult on your system at first. Also, the addition of foods like beans can make it seem like there is a MAJOR party going on in your intestines.

So I recommend you take things more slowly.

It sounds as if you are attempting a raw food diet, perhaps? Personally, I am not raw and it's not what I teach on my site. But I have done raw in the past, and it can be hard to digest some of the bulkier veggies, such as dark leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, etc.

So perhaps you need to lightly cook your veggies for a while until your body can deal with things a little easier. And if/when you do raw veggies, eat them in smaller amounts until all is well.

As far as beans are concerned, if you are not used to eating them your body needs the chance to build up the necessary enzymes to digest them. Start with very small legumes such as lentils, then when you can handle these move to small beans such as black beans, and then onto larger beans such as kidney.

Digestive enzymes should also help move you in the right direction. Take 1-2 before meals to help digest your food. I love the enzymes from Simplexity Health and have been using them since 1994. Click the link to order them online.

Hope this helps. xo

The "Issue"
by: Anonymous

Heres a few coping mechanisms I employ.

Time your beans. Don't eat them before work in an enclosed office, before the road trip or as part of a romantic supper.

As your body gets used to grains and legumes, it reacts less. That doesn't help right now, but at least there is relief down the road.

Staying vegan means that your gas smells less foul. Really.

Jump rope for 10 minutes in your garage before heading off to the gym. then do waist bends and squats. This gets rid of the worst of it before you jump on the treadmill next to that really really cute guy.

I know that some people dont want to rinse their beans, but I found that it really does help.

Beano is your friend. Keep a bottle in your purse and one in the kitchen.

Bring your dog everywhere with you. Blame it on him.

Cheers,
Memory

Slow but sure!!!
by: Edna

Easy does it is the secret to starting a vegan diet. Gradually build up your fiber. I agree with Sassy that you might want to slightly cook your veggies. The other comment on your "problem" having less odor as you get adjusted to the fiber is right. I found that charcoal tablets helped. Hang in there, it does get better and it's worth it......

Digestive Enzymes
by: Susan

Ok this is QUITE embarassing but after reading one question about gas build up I have to get more information. Sassy said she takes Digestive Enzymes to help with the digestion of her food. There are like a million-zillion different types out there. I'm specifically looking for something that will cut down or eliminate the gas all this vegan eating has caused. My kids are about to disown me!! LOL!! I'm not much into beans yet but I do eat alot of raw veggies, cooked veggies and lots of fruit. Am I doing too much? I need help!

Gassy in Ohio!! LOL

Dilemma
by: Marion B

I started a raw vegan diet a few months ago only to discover that there are some very serious challenges for me as I can not eat nuts (food allergy) and i recently have developed an adversion to soy. What other alternatives are there for a person like me? I know that this way of eating is the best for me as it has already helped me loss 15lbs and I am eager to see what else it can do.

Please respond as I would really like to continue but with the limited menus... I may just give up.

Thanks

A couple thoughts...
by: Sassy

Memory! Great advice, girl. Love the dog bit too. ;O)

Edna, are you still using charcoal tabs, or was that just in the beginning? Have never used them, and am curious...

Susan, it's been a while since you posted your question. Are you still having challenges? To answer your question, I have been using the same enzymes for years and years from Simplexity. Once in a while we run out and I am desperate so I buy another brand and they never seem to work the same.

Regardless of which brand you buy, just be sure they digest a wide range of foods. Here is what the enzymes I use digest, and I recommend similar:

• Amylase, breaks down starch
• Glucoamylase
• Invertase
• Lactase
• Pectinase (w/Phytase)
• Cellulase, breaks down fiber
• Lipase, breaks down fat
• Protease, breaks down protein

What makes the enzymes from Simplexity so unique is they also contain MycoProZyme™, which is the first (only?) enzyme that works in a low pH environment.

Marion, I understand you cannot eat nuts or soy. Is there a reason you are concerned? xo

soy yogurt helped me
by: Anonymous

I had the same problem. I found that adding a soy yogurt smoothie (blending it with frozen fruit) each day completely stopped my stomach/digestive problems. This might help.

digestive 'issues'
by: Anonymous

Hi Sassy!
I am the one who started this thread, and forgot to respond, so i will now. Thanks very much for your feedback and the feedback from your readers. It's been super helpful! Re the soy yogourt, turns out I can't handle soy, but I am glad it's working for you. I really appreciate the encouragement to keep going cause it's going to get better! I have recently been juicing my veggies and that's going really well.

I'm thinking the reader who can't eat nuts or soy was worried about how to get protein.

Cheers!

Nice
by: Sassy

Good news, and it's great to hear from you again with an update. Yes, I just love all the helpful advice our readers share so freely and graciously. Thank you to everyone, as always. :)

I think perhaps the reason the yogurt works for some is due to the healthy bacteria contained in yogurt. You might pick up some Acidophilus and add it to your nighttime ritual just before bed (4 caps or so).

I love the liquid Blueberry Acidophilus made by Nature's Life called Blueberry Blast. OMG. So delish. xo
