||
| Hi Welcome to the VeganCoach.com newsletter focusing on everyday vegan advice. The Golden Banana Newsletter is dedicated to assisting you with your everyday vegan cooking and nutrition questions. Well, Jeff and I are (mostly) moved into our new digs here in downtown Reno, Nevada. We have always loved living downtown in the various cities we have lived in, and after spending 9 years living in the 'burbs, it is such fun to be back in the middle of all the action. So in the midst of all the moving, I am FINALLY finding a free moment to get this newsletter out to you (you didn't think I forgot about you, did you? Perish the thought!) ;O) Have you ever been faced with the question "Where do you get your protein?" For those of us Vegans, questions like this inevitably come up. So I wasn't the least bit surprised to receive this question from one of your fellow Vegan Coach VIPs, and you will find this question and my answer below. And if you've ever wanted to purchase any of the e-books/e-courses created by Yours Truly (that's me) for a friend, this can be done and you will find the information for this also. Also, this month you will find a VERY special offer from my good friend Dr. Will Tuttle, author of The World Peace Diet. As you may know, I LOVE this book and recommend it highly. So be sure to check out the deets on this special offer. And reminder, the new Vegan Diet Frequently Asked Questions feature is included in our monthly newsletter now, where you will find some interesting questions asked and answered -- simply click those that interest you to learn more. You will also find a list of some questions which have yet to be answered. So once again, simply click the link for those that interest you, and share your experience and expertise with the VeganCoach.com community. The Recipe of the Month, Vegan Creamy Edamame Gratin, is OUTSTANDING and I highly recommend you make it ASAP. I know you will love it too. Each month, The Golden Banana is created by you with the questions you send me. Do you have a question, comment, or something else you'd like to share with our growing community of Vegan Coach fans? Enjoy! ![]() One of my more recent favorite books is called The World Peace Diet, and it was written by my friend Dr. Will Tuttle. Dr. Tuttle has asked me to participate in a special campaign, and I jumped at the chance because I think you will find it just as fabulous as I do. On Friday, March 12th, Dr. Tuttle is making a special offer for this critically-acclaimed book called “The March 12 World Peace Diet Compassion and Health Campaign.” We are hoping that many people buy The World Peace Diet through Amazon or Barnes & Noble on that day to help boost it to the top of the bestseller lists. This will create more opportunities for media conversations about the effects of our culture's overuse of meat and dairy and the multi-dimensional benefits of a plant-based diet. To encourage people to buy the book on March 12th, many generous and caring sponsors have donated bonus gifts to anyone who buys The World Peace Diet on that day. There are downloadable audio books, recipes, music, meditations, e-books, e-courses, discount coupons and the chance to enter drawings for prizes. There are over 50 gifts and prizes, all told, and anyone who buys the book on March 12 is eligible to receive them. (Yes, VeganCoach.com has included a special offer as well -- 15% off my new weight-loss course Get Down With Sass!) Personally, I read this book about a year ago. Here is a review I did of The World Peace Diet, which can be found on the VeganCoach.com Best Vegan Books page: The World Peace Diet is absolutely brilliant. I've read so many vegan books over the years -- too many to count, really. The way Dr. Will Tuttle approaches so many of the topics in this book made for an absolutely fascinating read. This is one of the best vegan books to discover how -- through eating -- we contribute to our culture’s values and paradigms at the most primal levels. It's been a very, very long time since a book captured my attention from the start, and nearly every single page had at least one sentence on it that blew me away. Each and every chapter was a compelling read. I am so proud to be vegan, and this book helped me to remember why. March 12 World Peace Diet Compassion and Health Campaign Many thanks for your time as we strive to bring The World Peace Diet to the forefront! xo
![]() Dear Sassy, Can I pay for your e-books, then have the link sent by e-mail to a friend or relative as a birthday or holiday gift? -- Jet, Richland, Washington Hi Jet, Yes, you can do this. The only challenge is that the links expire after 5 downloads or 120 hours, whichever comes first. So you would have to be sure to forward the links to them immediately after you receive them, and ask them to click the links to download the books immediately after they receive the email from you. In the unique case of my 7-week vegan weight-loss e-course Get Down With Sass!, after you make the purchase you are given a link to the Introduction. The Intro contains a form where you actually sign up for the course. So in this case you would forward the Intro onto your friend, and your friend would fill out the form at the end of the Intro so the course would go to their email address instead. (Hmmmm, hope that made sense.) Thanks, Jet. :O) ![]() Hey Sassy, I have a question for you. Every time I tell someone that I am vegan, the first thing they say is, "How do you get your protein?" I always seem to go into an explanation and my husband says I act like I'm on the defensive. I would like a quick reply that may even make them feel silly for asking. -- Denise, Redding, California Hi Denise! You ask such a great question. I used to go on big long tirades myself, and your hubby is right, it DOES make one sound like you're on the defensive. 1. Firstly, every single time someone asks me a question like this, I will ALWAYS assume they are coming from a good place rather than trying to lock me into a knock down drag out, ya know? I usually just wave my hand and say "Eh, protein is in just about every food out there. It's not even anything I think about." 2. If they nicely ask for more information, I usually say something like "You know what, the last thing I want to talk about right now is my diet. So I recommend you read Diet For A New America by John Robbins (or some other book you like) if you'd like to learn more. Would you like me to write that down for you?" If they REALLY want to know they should do their own research because there is just SO MUCH to learn on the topic. 3. And if they get an attitude, I never get down to their dumb level. I will laugh it off. Example: Them: We need to eat meat to get our protein. Me: Blah blah blah. Them: But our ancestors ate meat. We evolved eating animals. Me: Wow, that's one I haven't heard before. Them: Why do you think we have these canine teeth? Me: Oh puleeeeeez. Come on, you can do better than that. Try to think of one I haven't heard 10 million billion quatrillion times. Well, you get the drift. Always said with a smile or a laugh because it is meant to be lighthearted and fun. In the end, I want them to know that it's NO BIGGIE, and that is exactly how they will treat it. They usually end up laughing too. It is disarming because some vegans will put up a fight and come out with their dukes up. I like to spread the word that vegans are perfectly normal fun people who just happen to not eat animals. Is it REALLY that big of a deal? NOT! And that's the attitude I take. Hope this helps, Denise. :O) RECIPE OF THE MONTH ![]() Speaking of protein, here is a fantastically rich and creamy side dish that you will adore -- everyone I've ever served this to loves it. If you don't like edamames, substitute with lima beans. Vegan Creamy Edamame Gratin 4 tablespoons Earth Balance, divided 1. Preheat the oven to 400F. In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of the butter. Add the sliced leeks and cook over low heat, stirring, until they are softened, about 3 minutes. Add the mushrooms, cover and cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until they are tender, 15 minutes. Add the stock, coconut milk, bay leaves and tarragon and bring to a boil. Season with salt and pepper and remove from the heat. Remove bay leaves. 2. Put the frozen edamames in the bottom of a lightly greased 9x13 glass or ceramic baking dish. Pour the hot cream mixture over the edamames. Bake for 1 1/4 hours, or until the cream sauce thickens. 3. Preheat the broiler. In a small bowl, toss the bread crumbs with the nutritional yeast (or parmesan) and remaining 2 Tablespoons butter, melted. Sprinkle the crumbs over the edamames and broil for about 1 minute, rotating the dish for even browning. Let the gratin stand for 15 minutes before serving. Gratin will thicken considerably after sitting in the fridge overnight. Variations: * Sub frozen lima beans for the edamames Get DOWN With Sass! ![]() Get DOWN With Sass!
